Environmental Mold & Mycotoxin Assessment (EMMA) Testing

What is an EMMA Test?

The EMMA test uses sensitive molecular detection technology to look for the presence of 10 of the most toxigenic molds. It determines their presence and determines their relative abundance. EMMA also tests directly for 15 of the most poisonous Mycotoxins using its patented Mycotoxin detection test. Testing is simple, only requiring small amounts of dust or material from AC or heater filters or another carefully chose part of the home. Results will be sent to you within 10 business days from receipt of your sample.

How do you test for Mycotoxins?

Mycotoxins attach themselves to products and dust within a building so collection of the dust is crucial to evaluate the mycotoxin levels within a home. We always recommend having Elite Mold Services perform a detailed and thorough mold assessment of the home to help identify areas of concern related to water intrusion (past or current), visible mold growth and areas of high dust levels where a sample may be best collected from.

Once the inspection is completed, we will recommend a testing plan that suits your needs. With the EMMA test, you not only get a mycotoxin screening but also a mold DNA screen for the types of mold that could be producing mycotoxins. Even if you have a potentially toxic mold type growing in your home, it does not always mean it is producing mycotoxins so that is why the test could be a good fit for you.

When should I have EMMA / Mycotoxin testing done?

We highly suggest having mycotoxin testing performed when someone has an unexplained illness within a property and the investigating for possible causes begins. Many times, our clients come to us after receiving test results from a functional doctor where they test high in one or a few mycotoxin types. The most common are listed here:

  • Trichothecene
  • Ochratoxin
  • Aflatoxin
  • Gliotoxin

Once the test results come back from the laboratory, you will be able to determine if the elevated mycotoxins in your body could be coming from your home or potentially some other source like an office, school or even the food you eat.

What if you find a problem?

With our detailed assessment reports and laboratory findings, we can develop a plan to restore your home back to a normal condition. Typically, a remediation protocol would be recommended at this point in time to help craft a step-by-step process for the remediation contractor. Depending on the severity of the issues, contents within the home may need to be disposed of but often times can be cleaned to remove mold spores and mycotoxins. Removal of all moldy building materials is required also to help start that path back to a healthy home.
